During the celebrations of International Human Rights Day in 2009 the University of Pretoria, with the support of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, initiated the first World Human Rights Moot Court.
Ten teams, two per United Nations region, participated in the final round. High Commissioner Navi Pillay and two former South African Chief Justices as well as other eminent international jurists were among those who presided in the final rounds. In view of the positive response to the first competition, the University of Pretoria, with the support of the Southern African Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (ROSA), during the week leading up to the celebrations of 10 December presented the second World Human Rights Moot Court Competition on 8 and 9 December 2010.
This competition is gaining a good reputation internationally and has participants from all the regions of the world. The moot involves a written round after which teams are selected for the oral round. Teams argue a hypothetical case on issues of international human rights law in either English or French as if it will be adjudicated by a hypothetical International Human Rights Court, on the basis of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other applicable (such as regional) human rights instruments. A winner is announced for each United Nations world region.
